Wake Forest Sophomore into Round of 16 of the Winston-Salem Open

Wake Forest Sophomore Mees Rottgering received a qualifying wild card into the main draw of the Winston-Salem Open along with former Demon Deac DK Suresh.

Rottgering sprinted into the second round of qualifying with a 6-1, 6-0 win over American Hunter Heck in less than an hour. The ACC Freshman of the Year and ACC Tournament MVP then defeated Hugo Grenier 6-4 6-1 to get into the main draw, followed by his 3-set defeat of Jan Choinski to make it into the round of 64.

Rottgering then made his way into the Round of 16 with an impressive straight-set win over World No. 58 Tomas Machac. Rottgering got off to a fast start, taking the first set 6-2, before keeping the pressure on in a tight second set and pulling out the tiebreak to secure the victory.

Fellow Demon Deac DK Suresh wasn’t able to find the same success against Juan Manuel Cerundolo. After staying even throughout the opening set, Suresh fell in a close tiebreak before Cerundolo closed out the match 6-3 in the second. Despite the loss, Suresh put together an impressive week in Winston-Salem, earning his first ATP Tour main-draw victory.
